These grants are funded by government and are meant to help the people who need them most — pensioners, people living with disabilities, caregivers looking after children, and working-age adults who are unemployed and have almost no income. The exact amounts change each year, usually in April and October. You can see every current figure in our guide to SASSA grant amounts for 2026. One important rule to remember is that you can only receive one personal grant for yourself — you cannot, for example, get both the Old Age Grant and the Disability Grant at the same time. You can, however, receive a Child Support Grant for each child in your care on top of your own situation. We explain the combinations in detail in can you receive more than one SASSA grant.

Most SASSA grants use a means test, which is simply a check of how much money and how many assets you have. The idea is to make sure grants go to people who genuinely need them. There are two parts: an income test and, for some grants, an asset test.
For the Old Age and Disability grants, a single person may earn up to R9,350 a month (about R112,200 a year) and hold assets worth up to R1,584,000. Married couples are assessed on their combined figures, with roughly double those limits. The home you live in does not count towards the asset test, which surprises many people — owning your house does not disqualify you.
The SRD R370 grant works differently. Instead of a fixed yearly income line, SASSA checks your bank account every month and looks for money coming in. If more than R624 flows into your account in a given month, that month is declined with a reason like "income source identified". This is why one month can be approved and the next declined. The Child Support Grant has its own, more generous caregiver limits: R5,800 a month for a single caregiver or R11,600 combined for a married couple. Because it is assessed on the caregiver's income rather than the household's, many people who receive the SRD grant also qualify for Child Support at the same time. The way you apply depends on the grant. The SRD R370 grant is applied for entirely online at srd.sassa.gov.za, or through the SASSA WhatsApp line on 082 046 8553 — you never need to visit an office. Our guide on applying online versus in person explains the differences.
The other grants — Old Age, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child and Care Dependency — are usually applied for in person at your nearest SASSA local office. You will need to bring your original documents plus copies. The exact list depends on the grant, but it almost always includes your 13-digit South African ID, proof of where you live, and proof of your income or three months of bank statements. For the Child Support Grant you also need the child's birth certificate; for the Disability Grant you need a medical assessment; and for the Foster Child Grant you need the court order. If you cannot get to an office because of illness or disability, SASSA allows someone to apply on your behalf using a power of attorney, or can arrange a home visit.
The SRD grant generates the most questions, because it is checked and paid month by month. "Pending" or "referred" is not a rejection; it simply means SASSA is still verifying your details, as we explain in what referred or pending status means.
If a month is declined, you have the right to appeal within 90 days. The most common decline reasons — "identity verification failed", "means income source identified", "alternative income source" — each have a specific fix, which we set out in SRD declined reasons and how to fix them and how to appeal a declined SRD grant. Two of the most common practical problems are an out-of-date cellphone number and incorrect banking details, since SASSA uses your phone for one-time PINs and your bank account to pay you. Fix these using update your SASSA phone number and change your SRD banking details.
SRD payments are staggered across the second half of each month, and your date can differ from someone else's. There is no need to worry if a friend is paid before you — read SRD payment dates to understand how the schedule works.
For the older grants, SASSA pays in a set order at the start of each month: Older Persons grants first, then Disability grants the next day, then Child Support and the remaining grants. You can receive your grant into your own bank account or onto a Postbank card, and collect cash at major retailers, the Post Office and ATMs. Buying groceries at a till is free, while ATM withdrawals may carry standard bank fees. A grant is not always "set and forget". The SRD grant asks you to confirm your details regularly, and the other grants are reviewed from time to time. Keeping your contact and banking information current is the single best way to avoid interruptions.
